Art History, Certificate of Achievement (COA)
Art History, Certificate of Achievement (COA)
The Art History Certificate of Achievement offers a diverse curriculum designed to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of art historical issues. Courses address Theory and Methodology, Museum Studies and Gallery Management, and the Western Canon from Antiquity to the Post‐Modern World. Offerings focused on Women in the Visual Arts, Asia, Islam, Ancient and Modern Mexico, Ancient Meso- and South America, and Modern Latin America add further diversity.
The Art History COA provides a rich foundation in the history of art in context. Students critically examine the importance of artistic traditions in the study of human culture and learn to identify, analyze, and interpret works of art and architecture from a variety of historical periods. Creative works are evaluated as individual achievements and also as reflections of the political, social, religious, and economic interests of the societies from which they emerged. As a result, this COA provides support for local and transfer degrees in Art History or in the related fields of Studio Art. It also provides a pathway for non-majors who would like to demonstrate the development of writing and analytic skills in a specifically art historical context.
