The English as a Second Language Level 5 Certificate of Competency prepares students to transition to credit ESL college courses. The courses required for the certificate integrate high-intermediate to advanced grammar and writing skills and listening and speaking skills that prepare students for academic work in college-level courses. Students will also acquire skills to effectively communicate in academic, social, employment, financial, and medical settings. The focus is to prepare students to transition to advanced credit ESL courses and college content courses.

- Give a 5-7 minute research-based presentation in front of the class applying target vocabulary, grammatical structures, and presentation techniques.
- Apply note-taking skills learned to an academic lecture and a professional presentation to demonstrate comprehension of main points and definition of terms.
- Define and identify the parts of speech in an academic text.
- Use appropriate verb tenses including simple tenses, continuous tenses, present and past perfect, and conditional structures in written assignments.
- Identify and accurately compose simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex sentences including correct punctuation and use of connectors.
