Theatre Arts, Associate in Arts for Transfer
The Associate in Arts in Theatre Arts for Transfer at Oxnard College (AA-T in Theatre Arts) provides an inclusive environment that promotes creativity, collaboration, community, and culture. Many students find a home in Theatre Arts that can lead to a wide variety of jobs in the entertainment industry including actor, director, costumer, script coach, dramaturge, stunt person, playwright, drama coach, set designer, light designer, sound tech, production assistant, camera operator, business manager, instructor, etc. Students also learn soft skills needed in many different career paths including education (both as teacher and administrator), psychology, law, advertising, television, film, management, and a variety of private and governmental positions. Students will explore theoretical and practical courses in all aspects of theatre, providing preparation in acting, writing, dramaturgy, directing, and technical theatre through productions and student generated materials.
The AA-T in Theatre Arts is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts, Drama, or other majors designated as “similar” majors by a CSU campus. For a current list of what majors (and what options or areas of emphasis within majors) have been designated as “similar” to this degree at each CSU campus, please refer to CSU’s Associate Degree for Transfer Major and Campus Search and seek guidance from an Oxnard College counselor. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.
To earn an AA-T in Theatre Arts, students must:
- Complete a minimum of 60 CSU-transferable semester units including both of the following:
- Certified completion of the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC).
- A minimum of 18 semester units and all required coursework for the AA-T in Theatre Arts major as listed in the Oxnard College catalog.
- Obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework. While a minimum of 2.0 is required for admission, some majors may require a higher GPA. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
3. Obtain a grade of “C” or better or “P” in all courses required in the major. Even though a "pass-no-pass" is allowed, it is highly recommended that students complete their major courses with a letter grade (A, B, or C).
4. Complete a minimum of 12 semester units in residence within the Ventura County Community College District.
Students transferring to a CSU campus that accepts the AA-T in Theatre Arts will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree (unless the major is a designated “high-unit” major at a particular campus. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. Students should consult with a counselor when planning to complete the degree for more information on university and transfer admission requirements.
