Human Services, Associate in Science
The Human Services program prepares students to support individuals and families in areas like mental health, addiction recovery, youth services, homelessness, and more. Students gain real-world skills to work as case managers, advocates, youth workers, paraeducators, and more across settings such as group homes, community agencies, and social service organizations. Through hands-on experience and coursework in diversity, intervention strategies, and social issues, students can earn a certificate or associate degree that leads to meaningful work or transfer opportunities.

Students are encouraged to take at least one of the following courses.
In order to earn an Associate in Science in Human Services, students are required to:
- Complete Oxnard College’s General Education requirements to include areas 1-7 or Cal-GETC.
- Complete a minimum of 18 units and all required coursework for the Human Services major as listed in the Oxnard College catalog with a grade of “C” or better (or a “P”) in each of the courses selected.
- Complete a minimum of 60 degree-applicable units. Students planning to transfer should complete 60 CSU transferable or 60 UC transferable units, depending on their intended transfer destination.
- Complete requirements in scholarship (2.0 minimum cumulative degree-applicable GPA).
- Complete 12 units in residence within the Ventura County Community College District.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the social services’ agencies and their goals for assisting clients with problems in the community.
- Identify elementary knowledge of intervention techniques for counseling clients.
- Utilize role playing in order to examine values and attitudes of human service providers and their clients.
- Evaluate the role of human services professionals and the needs of the poor.
- Incorporate community social welfare goals within the field of service along with the basic needs of clients.
- Demonstrate familiarity with major theoretical approaches to service delivery.
- Demonstrate an understanding of cross-cultural differences and an understanding of the importance of the structural context in analyzing social problems.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical treatment of human service clientele when providing service.
